Clear aligners have transformed orthodontics, and with that has come a confusing menu of brand names — Invisalign, Spark, Angel and more. Patients often arrive convinced they need to pick the “best” brand, having read very different things online. So let me clear this up from a specialist’s chair: the brand on the box matters far less than two other things — the clinician using it, and the type of bite you have.
Aligners versus fixed braces: two different systems
First, a useful distinction. Clear aligners and fixed braces are genuinely two different systems that work in different ways. Fixed braces grab hold of each tooth and move it directly. Aligners use a series of clear, removable trays to nudge the teeth along in small increments.
Within each of those systems, the various brands are really a variation on a theme. So the aligner brands sit together as one family, and the fixed options — metal, ceramic, lingual — sit together as another.
The aligner brands we offer
We work with the leading aligner systems, including Invisalign, Spark and Angel Aligners. To a patient, they look very similar in the mouth — and in truth they are. They’re all clear, removable trays doing the same fundamental job. Spark is sometimes described as marginally clearer, but once any of them are in the mouth it’s very hard to tell the difference.
What actually differs
If the trays are so similar, what guides the choice of brand? More than anything, it’s the clinician’s familiarity with the system — and that genuinely matters for your result.
Each brand has its own design software that the orthodontist uses to plan exactly how your teeth will move. An orthodontist who knows a particular system inside out can get the software to deliver precisely the movements they want — which means a better, more predictable result for you. I personally tend to use Invisalign, because I know its planning software extremely well and can reliably achieve the outcome I’m aiming for; my colleague Dr Anjli Patel often prefers another system she knows equally well. Neither is “better” in the abstract; what matters is a specialist working confidently with a system they trust.
The decision that really matters: your bite
Here’s the part patients rarely hear, and it’s the most important. The biggest factor in whether aligners are right for you isn’t the brand at all — it’s your bite.
- Deep bites are one of the harder things to treat with aligners. In these cases, fixed braces often work better and more efficiently, because we can physically grab the teeth and introduce the corrections a deep bite needs.
- Open bites, by contrast, often respond better to aligners than to fixed braces.
So when you come in, I’m not starting with “which brand?” I’m looking at how your teeth meet, and asking whether an aligner or a fixed brace will get you the best result in the most sensible timeframe. Sometimes both would work well and it’s your choice; sometimes I’ll be honest that one route will serve you far better.
One transparent price
A quick word on cost, because it causes needless anxiety. We charge one price for aligner treatment, whichever aligner system turns out to be right for you. You won’t find yourself quietly steered towards a pricier badge — the fee is the same, so the decision can stay focused entirely on what’s clinically best for your smile.
How we match you to the right system
In practice, by the time we plan your treatment you’ll already have had a friendly chat about the pros and cons of aligners — that they’re removable and discreet, but must be worn for long hours each day and taken out to eat and drink. We then combine that with what your bite needs, and recommend the system and clinician best placed to deliver your result.
Frequently asked questions
Is Spark really clearer than Invisalign? It’s sometimes described that way, but the difference is marginal. Once any of these aligners are in the mouth, they all look discreet and it’s very hard to tell them apart.
Can clear aligners fix any case? No. Aligners are superb for many cases — open bites especially — but deep bites and some complex movements are often better handled with fixed braces. The right tool depends on your bite, which is what a specialist assessment determines.
Does the brand affect the price? Not here. We charge a single price for aligner treatment regardless of which system we use, so the choice stays purely clinical.
