There’s a question I get asked constantly — and one I find oddly flattering. Whenever I’ve had dental work and a new dentist looks in my mouth, they often say, “an orthodontist did this, didn’t they?” People are amazed they can tell just by looking. The reason they can is the whole point of this article: a specialist orthodontist isn’t only making teeth look straight. We’re building a healthy bite — and that’s a different, and more important, goal.
Straight teeth versus a healthy bite
It’s easy to think orthodontics is about lining up the teeth you see when you smile. That’s part of it — but only part. Your bite is how your upper and lower teeth meet when you close together and chew. You can have teeth that look perfectly straight from the front yet meet badly underneath, and over time a bad bite can quietly damage your teeth and gums.
A good orthodontic result combines both: teeth that look beautiful and a bite that works properly and protects itself for the long term.
How a bad bite damages teeth
A poorly meeting bite isn’t just a technicality — it has real consequences:
- Deep bites can see the lower front teeth biting up into the roof of the mouth, or the upper teeth biting down onto the gum in front of the lower teeth, gradually stripping the gum away.
- Worn teeth, where teeth grind against each other in the wrong places and wear down over the years.
- Protruding teeth that are more exposed to being knocked and damaged.
Correcting the bite can genuinely prolong the lifespan of your teeth. That’s why, for many adults, sorting the bite out is the real prize — the straight smile is the bonus.
The risk of only straightening the “front six”
This is the heart of it. A lot of teeth-straightening on offer focuses on the front six teeth — the ones in the smile. Done well in the right case, that can be fine. But the front teeth are only the visible part of a much bigger system. Move them without considering the bite and you can sometimes make the bite worse, not better.
It’s why a significant share of the re-treatment I do is for people whose teeth were straightened without the bite being addressed — and who then need it putting right. Knowing the whole picture, and treating it, is exactly what specialist training is for.
Why orthodontists aim for a different result
An orthodontist is trained to achieve the ideal result the bite will allow — not simply a tidy-looking front row. We have different aims of treatment and different standards for what “finished” means. That’s the difference a dentist spots from across the surgery: not different skill in every case, but a different target.
I should be fair here: this isn’t a blanket criticism of dentists. Some general dentists have a real interest in orthodontics and do lovely work, and many are excellent at knowing their limits and referring on the cases that need a specialist. The point isn’t who you see — it’s making sure the bite, not just the smile, is part of the plan.
When to get a second opinion
If you’ve been offered teeth-straightening and something is nagging at you — perhaps you’re not sure your bite has been considered — it is always reasonable to seek a second opinion from a specialist before committing. At worst, it reassures you that you’re in good hands. At best, it flags something important before treatment begins rather than after. Either way, it’s a sensible step for a decision you’ll live with for years.
Frequently asked questions
Can my dentist fix my bite? Some can, particularly those with a strong interest in orthodontics — and good dentists will refer more complex bites to a specialist. The key question to ask is whether your bite, not just your front teeth, is part of the treatment plan.
Why do re-treatments happen? Often because the front teeth were straightened without the bite being addressed, leaving a result that looks fine briefly but causes problems — or simply doesn’t last. Correcting the bite from the start avoids this.
Will fixing my bite take longer than just straightening my teeth? It can, because we’re coordinating how the teeth meet, not just their front-on appearance. But it’s that work which protects your teeth for the long term.
